School Year Resolutions

Deb has a few school-year resolutions this year and she is sharing them with us. Sharing them means she actually has to stick to them this year, which she is really hoping to do!

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions but find them hard to keep as you are usually on holiday on January 1st, not to mention cold, hunkering down for winter, suffering from SAAD, etc? Well, I do.

So this year, I have decided to make School Year Resolutions. The timing works better for me than New Year’s. The kids and I have had a great, fun summer, and then when September hits, the realities of school, routine and work rear their ugly heads once again, and it seems to me to be a great time to start a new initiative or two.

Here’s what on my mind this year:

1. Follow through on those Family Meetings!
We have them sporadically, but this year, I want to make them a family habit. We need a way to discuss our family plans, rules, and discuss any issues.

2. Get my oldest to exercise!

He loves to read, watch / play with screens, and (at the moment) play with his Pokemon cards. (What is it with Pokemon?!? Seems a bit boring to me, though I wouldn’t tell him that!) Sports are not his thing. He has trouble sleeping, focusing in class, and sitting down through dinner. I think it would help if he were more fit, plus I want to instill the habit of exercise in him. I have got to find an outlet… I am going to try swimming, tennis, and whatever other non-team activities I can think of!

3. Reduce bargaining!

I have found, over time, that everything is a haggle and debate with my kids. Bribes, threats, and consequences are thrown around regularly. This has to stop before I go crazy, although it’s probably all my fault in the first place. At our next family meeting we will discuss how we can all listen to each other better…. and my husband and I need to hold more firm, without the threats. I wanted to make the title of that one “STOP bagaining” – but I need to be realistic.

Are you making any new years resolutions? Or have great suggestions on how to reduce the bargaining? I am all ears!

Hope you all enjoy a successful back to school!
