Fostering a Successful School Year

Education

Whether it’s the beginning of the school year or well into the term, sometimes helping a child succeed academically means understanding how he or she learns best. Experts say individual learning styles are linked to one or more of the senses and can generally be classified as visual, auditory, kinesthetic or tactile. Kumon Math and Reading Centres offers these tips for identifying and working with your child’s learning style:

Seeing Is Believing
Visual learners learn best when “shown” how to do something—they thrive on written directions. To help your child see letters come together on the page, try writing out spelling lists.

All Ears
Auditory learners retain more information from what they hear. Have your child record himself or herself spelling out words on a spelling list, then spell aloud with the audio clip.

Keep Moving
Kinesthetic learners express themselves through movement and often have trouble sitting still. To learn a spelling list, write the words on labels and place on found objects or recite spelling while jumping rope.

Feeling Smart
Tactile learners need to feel and manipulate objects to learn best. Use magnetic letters to form spelling words on the refrigerator or shape the letters in clay.
