My First Time at The Royal

The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair

I’m almost embarrassed to admit that up until a few days ago, I had never been to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. There was no real reason for not attending, when I thought about it. I suppose I assumed it was actually for people who rode horses — or who at least know something about horses — (which I do not) so there would be nothing interesting for me to see.

Oh, how completely wrong I was.

My tour of the Fair was so much fun and I’d say it would be difficult to see everything you want to see in just one day. There is 10 hours of programming with animals and their trainers doing crazy things a la this guy (the horse whisperer) from Australia:

I won’t get into the cows that apparently sell at that show for over $30,000 in some cases (I seem to be in the wrong business…)

This year I was told that The Royal had a big focus on food, farmers and teaching people to understand where their food comes from and how it gets from the farm to your plate. This is a particular topic that is close to my heart so I loved talking to the farmers on my tour. Forty percent of people touring are families, and it is so important that kids start to understand where their food comes from.

I spent some time talking to the owner of Nature Fresh Farms who brought a beehive and a greenhouse to the show for the first time. And then I saw his gorgeous vegetables:

But if that doesn’t do it for you you can head over to the butter sculpting competition. Yes, you heard me. There is a competition for the best sculpture made out of butter. Mmmm. Add some potatoes or corn on the cob and I’m there.

Needless to say, the show is fantastic and there is truly something for everyone there.

It runs until November 10th and is a great way to show the family a good time. Besides, where else can you see horse shows, butter competitions and square dancers, all in one place in downtown Toronto…?
