As we swing into spring, here are eight family-friendly ideas for things to do in April in Toronto. It’s time to shake the winter blahs, welcome the warmer weather (be sure to pack the umbrella), and get out there!
1. Root for the Home Team
The Toronto FC soccer season starts in April. Speaking of swinging, the Blue Jays home opener is up to bat, too. (Kids’ tickets are discounted and kids can run the bases after the game on Jr.. Jays Saturdays.) Not ready to hang up your high-tops? Catch some hoops with a Raptors game before the season ends.
2. Movie Madness
The TIFF Kids International Kids Festival is not just about movies—though, for the record, more than 100 of them are shown each year. The festival also includes the digiPlaySpace (opens in late March), with tons of interactive games that incorporate science, videography, art, video games…. Even grown-ups are sure to find these cool.
3. Play at the Park
Head to High Park for the High Park Zoo, the renovated Jamie Bell “Castle” Playground, the trackless train, or biking paths. High Park’s legendary cherry blossoms could make an appearance at the end of the month: check the park forums for updates.
4. Get Out to a Garden
Open in April: Toronto Botanical Garden (check out these family-friendly events), Allen Gardens Conservatory, Franklin Children’s Garden. Also keep an eye out for events at Evergreen Brick Works’ hands-on children’s garden.
5. Forage at Farmer’s Markets
Seasonal farmer’s markets open in May or June, but here are some of our favourite farmer’s markets around the city that are open now. (The early bird catches the first bunch of ripe asparagus!)
See Toronto’s best farmer’s markets for families.
6. Walk with the Animals
Don your rubber boots to visit Riverdale Farm, home to sheep, roosters, and more—it’s free! At the Toronto Zoo, participate in a rattlesnake workshop or the annual Easter “eggs-stravagaza” activities, and get a glimpse of the baby gorilla (and help the zoo name her). See llamas and wallabies at High Park Zoo (free).
7. Head to the Harbourfront
Let kids get their hands dirty at the Harbourfront Centre’s indoor Discovery Garden or do a family scavenger hunt as part of the annual Spring Fling (Apr. 18–20). Craft and dance workshops, storytelling, and a dog show are also on this month.
8. Do a Day Trip
There are lots of excellent day trips near Toronto, within an hour’s drive (or two): hike in a conservation area, take a vintage train ride in Mennonite country, try fat biking in Collingwood. (See 8 day trips for families.) Or head to Niagara Falls for a fun-filled family day!
