Family-Friendly Cafes in Toronto

Family Fun

The weather is all over the place. Is it winter? Is it spring? Either way, the kids are going crazy and you have cabin fever, so you need to get out of the house. Take a walk or drive to one of these local family-friendly Toronto cafés. Make the kids feel special and treat yourself!

TOT The Cat Café

As long as you and your little ones don’t suffer from allergies, Toronto’s first cat café is a great way to spend a couple hours, especially if you don’t have a pet of your own. Kids will love playing with the friendly felines and you’ll get to enjoy some caffeine and little treats (there’s juice or tea for the kids).

If you happen to fall in love with one of the kitties (how could you not?) you will be happy to know that they are all up for adoption. TOT and the Toronto Humane Society are partnered up to help each of the café cats find a new home.

Snakes and Lattes

Snakes and Lattes is a board game café (with two locations) with evening events for grown-ups (date night!). Take the (bigger) kids earlier in the day to make sure it’s not too crowded (and before the other clientele move on to something stronger than coffee).

This is the kind of café that is perfect for the 8+ crowd; the shelves of board games provide endless fun and the potential to find a new favourite game. The staff are also game-geeks, in case the kids have questions that you can’t answer.

They don’t have a kid’s menu, but the pretzel bites and popcorn, kettle chips, and baked goods are family-friendly.

Red Fish Blue Fish Creative Cafe

This crafting café is perfect for all ages, with a drop-in play space for crawlers, toddlers and early walkers. The craft space comes with everything the kids will need to feel inspired, including feathers, sparkle glue, and googly-eyes.

There are classes upstairs, including yoga and homework help, but if you just want to relax, let the kids play together while you chat with the other parents.

The menu is stacked with gluten-free, nut-free and organic kid-friendly items.

The Children’s Storefront

This is more of an all-inclusive play destination than a café. It’s a non-profit organization that offers a clean play space for kids and parents to connect. You can bring your own (nut-free) snacks, although inexpensive vegetarian food (and coffee) is available on-site.

This is much more than a café; it offers toys, puzzles, art, costumes, books, and even community cooking classes (kids welcome) twice a week.

Wallflower

While this is technically more of a bar than a café, it is a great spot for an early evening or pre-dinner treat. The hipsters start to pour in around 8 pm, but for the three hours before that, local parents often bring their kids in for drinks and snacks or a special dinner treat. The menu has kid-friendly sandwiches, like grilled cheese, pasta, and desserts.

The décor is a lot trendier (think rustic-chic) than most family-friendly places, but the atmosphere is cozy. Kids will feel like they are on a grown-up adventure, while you will feel like you’re still in the land of adults; the perfect combination.
