Dear 2003 Me by Samantha Chan

Dear 2003 Me,

To say that the next few years will be an exciting ride for you might be an understatement. In 2010, the future you will introduce the concept of Social Painting at Paintlounge in Markham, and in 2013 you will open a second location in downtown Toronto. Since the 2003 you only just finished your first year in Industrial Engineering at U of T, she might call the future you a bit crazy (are you confused yet?).

I know you love art since you’ve taken painting lessons for more than 13 years. I also know you love the problem solving of math and physics and that’s why you went into engineering. Did you ever notice how your artistic side affects the way you approach problem solving? Instead of memorizing a formula, you need to figure out how it was derived. Art taught you to have a curious nature, to explore possibilities and not to take things simply the way they are presented.

In a few years, you’ll get awesome corporate opportunities in engineering and investment banking and you can thank your creativity for those. You’ll help these businesses come up with out-of-the-box solutions to their problems and you’ll move up the corporate ladder quickly.

So why does the future you open Paintlounge?  Well, you’ve always known how important creativity is and that you would never be who you are without it. You wanted to create a space for everyone to unleash their full creative potential, starting at a young age. You also know that the best way for a child to develop their individuality is through learning to express themselves and that creativity allows a child to develop analytic skills and make better decisions. And you know that it is important for kids to develop social skills, so it’s better for them to learn all of this in an interactive environment. Paintlounge is your creation and has become the perfect environment for children to use their imagination and inspire them to dream big for their future.

I hope this makes sense, and am sure that all of this will be crystal clear in just a few years. Make sure you continue to pursue your passion and keep painting. I’ll check in with you again in a few years!

Love,

Sam (The 2013 You)
