Winter festivals are scheduled back-to-back this month in and around the city. It’s time to enjoy winter’s last hurrah (wishful thinking?) before we eke into spring in March. Also, Family Day is coming on February 16, with tons of fun things to do for kids and parents alike all weekend.

TD Shakespeare Library Club is one of our favourite free programs for kids in the city. Register for this free program for ages 7–12 through the Toronto Public Library. January 31–March 7
Where can you see axe-throwing, dog stunts, live falcon demonstrations, learn about moose and black bear hunting, and go fishing indoors—all in an afternoon? At the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show, of course! February 5–8
Kuumba 2015 is a celebration of Black History Month with music, dance, kids’ films, storytelling, and workshops. February 6–8
The Barrie Winterfest is an annual festival to remind us that winter is f-u-n, exactly when we need it most. Family activities include: dog-sled rides, a mini tube slide, helicopter rides, an ice maze, snow and ice sculptures, lumberjack shows, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and skating, maple taffy, clowns and puppet shoes and more! February 7–8
RBC Piano Extravaganza takes place throughout the month of February: many piano events that include Pianopalooza—a an afternoon piano marathon of mini-concerts at Koerner Hall; and Pianorama, a TSO concert for young people. February 4–14
February is a great month for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Take a weekend and head up to Collingwood for a guided night snowshoe hike at Scenic Caves, or daytime skiing or snowshoeing through pristine nature and across their amazing 420-foot-long suspension bridge. January 17–March 21
Chinese New Year Celebrations Ring in the Year of the Ram with Chinese New Year on February 19. The Toronto Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebration will feature traditional Chinese lion dances, kung fu demonstrations, paper lantern making workshops, and more. February 21–22
The Lillian H. Smith Library downtown will also host a Chinese New Year celebration with dance performances and face painting for kids. February 22
DJ Skate Nights at the Harbourfront Centre continue on Saturday nights (beginning at 8 pm) throughout February, featuring soca, hip-hop, and more. February 7, 14, 21
The Harlem Globetrotters are coming to town! See them at one of six events in the GTA between February 7 and 15.
The Next Wave Film Festival at the TIFF Bell Lightbox Theatre highlights films for youth ages 14–18, and features a 24-hour young filmmaker’s challenge. February 13–15
Family Day is February 16 this year and Family Day festivals and events are scheduled across the entire province all weekend, February 14–16. Take advantage of many festivals across the city. A few top picks are Family Fun Fest, Kid Fest Toronto, TIFF Family Day Films, and Family Day on Toronto’s Waterfront.

The free HarbourKIDS Skating Festival takes place on Family Day weekend, with group skating events, ice dancing performances, storytelling, crafts, and music performances. February 15–16
Watch your fellow Torontonians strip down to their swimsuits and take part in a series of polar bear dips for the Great Canadian Chill, to benefit Stop Kids Cancer Cold!, on Family Day. February 16
Enjoy comfort food that you don’t have to cook! Head to the Distillery District for Heatfest, where you can warm up with soups, stews, curries, poutine, and more, from local food trucks and restaurants. February 16
Check out the amazing ice sculptures at the 10th annual Bloor-Yorkville IceFest. This year’s theme: Frozen In Time, displaying wonders of ancient Egypt. February 21–22
Get summer camp all settled: attend the free Our Kids Camp Expo to meet with representatives from more than 50 day and overnight camps. February 22
It’s that time already: maple syrup season! Kick it off with the Sugar Bush Maple Syrup Festival at the Kortright Centre, then stay tuned for more maple syrup fests to come in March. February 28–April 6
