Spring is here, and after an unusually long winter, kids are itching to get outside. We love that our kids are getting out and getting fresh air and exercise, but what we don’t love are the grass stains, dirt stains, and blood stains that come with it!
For whatever the season might throw at your clothes (or whatever your kids throw on themselves), here are some of our favourite ways to get help ensure you get the stain-removal results you are looking for fast, so you can spend more time doing what matters most to you.
1. OxiClean and other oxygen/enzyme cleaners are great at getting whites really white and keeping colours bright. They work well on tough, dried-on stains, including grass, soil, clay, fruit, chocolate, grease, oil, sweat, and blood, by using high-performance, colour-safe enzymes. We might try natural cleaners first, but OxiClean is what we turn to when dealing with serious stains. This spring, OxiClean™ Stain removers has launched a brand-new line of powerful laundry detergents.
2. Hydrogen peroxide is a simple, natural compound (just hydrogen and oxygen) that will remove most organic stains, as long as they’re fresh. Forget bleach! If you’ve ever tried bleach on a blood stain, you know what we’ve discovered: it turns the fabric yellow. No, thanks. Hydrogen peroxide is what you should be using instead. Apply directly to stains.
3. Distilled white vinegar is another classic cleaning tool you are probably under-using. Buy it in bulk! It works great as a rinse-cycle additive (about 1/4 cup per load) to remove odours like mildew from towels or perspiration from t-shirts and socks. It’s a fabric softener and static-cling-reducer, too. Many moms also swear by it for cloth diapers, to neutralize odour and reduce soap residue.
4. Baking soda in the wash cycle and vinegar in the rinse cycle is a one-two punch that knocks out a multitude of stains and gets whites bright. Use an old toothbrush to work the baking soda in and lift stains, and add a 1/4 or 1/2 cup to your wash cycle to “boost” your detergent. (Also see 20 household uses for baking soda.)
For best results, apply stain removers directly to the stain and let it work on the clothing for a bit before washing. For stubborn stains, let them soak in OxiClean or other oxygen cleaner for one to six hours.
