The warmer weather has finally arrived and the days are passing quickly on the school calendar. Summer vacation is almost here.
Once the academic year has ended, parents will receive their child’s report card and review feedback from the entire year. Assessing academic progress in the summer months can leave parents with unanswered questions and uncertainty about how to plan for the next grade level.
This is why families should consider having a proactive meeting with the classroom teacher prior to summer break. This communication may provide valuable feedback that includes end-of-year strategies to refresh study habits, as well as academic suggestions for the summer months.
The Teachers on Call team has put together these 10 questions as a starting point to kick off the conversation:
10 End of the School Year Questions to Ask
- How was my child’s learning and achievement throughout the school year?
- What areas went well and where is there opportunity for improvement?
- Do you have any specific comments about my child’s progress?
- Are there any areas where my child is not at grade-level?
- How was my child’s interaction with other students?
- Are there any areas of concern to watch and share with next year’s teacher?
- What are some suggestions for the following school year?
- How can I continue to support my child’s development over the summer?
- Which educational websites would be helpful to reinforce curriculum?
- Do you have a recommended reading list for the summer holiday?
Depending on the outcome of the discussion, families may seek out academic support in different ways. Recommendations can range from parents working directly with students, professional tutoring, summer enrichment programs, and visits to the library. This proactive chat will help students finish the school year stronger and ultimately get a head start for September.
