Foolproof Homemade Play Dough Recipe

Family Fun

This easy, non-toxic play dough recipe results in perfectly pliable modelling dough every time. We first happened upon it at the College Montrose Children’s Place and asked them to share their “secret” recipe, developed over years of testing with Toronto kids.

This is it: the perfect homemade play dough recipe!

What you need:

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 tsp baking soda
2 cups water
1 tbsp oil

How to make it:

  1. Mix dry ingredients together in a large bowl and then add wet ingredients.
  2. Mix well until there are no lumps.
  3. Microwave for 2 minutes and then remove all the dry play dough from the edges.
  4. Mix well and then microwave for another 2 minutes.
  5. Remove the dry play dough and mix well. Play dough may require another minute or two if very sticky.
  6. Roll out play dough to cool.

Tips:

  • Add some pizzazz with food colouring and glitter or paper confetti.
  • Keep the dough in an airtight container (like a plastic zip-lock bag) in the fridge for best results. It should last two to four weeks.
  • Don’t throw out the old play dough: keep it in a zip-lock bag to use as a sensory tool. (Or a stress-reliever for mom and dad!)
