During the winter months, Scenic Caves Nature Adventures transforms into a snow-white wonderland shimmering with family-friendly adventures. Explore a 200-year-old forest featuring 100-foot-tall trees and panoramic views.
Set in one of Canada’s 16 UNESCO biosphere reserves and perched high atop the Niagara Escarpment, the unique geographic location provides an excellent elevation for reliable snow conditions and consistent temperatures. Teeming with friendly wildlife, it’s a superbly natural location to view animal and bird tracks in the snow.
The spectacular views from various lookout points are breathtaking. Scenic Caves boasts the only location in Ontario with a footbridge open during the winter. One of the snowshoe trails crosses over the suspension bridge, allowing you to survey a 10,000-square-km panorama of south Georgian Bay. Cross-country skiers may remove their skis and hike down to the bridge.
Cross-country skiers can glide along 27 km of trails professionally groomed daily for both classic and skate styles. Lessons may be reserved and waxing facilities are available. For snowshoers, there are 10 km of dedicated, pristine paths to stomp through. If you can walk, you can snowshoe, making it a wonderful activity for all ages.
For adventurers ages 8 and older, reserve a guided night snowshoe hike and experience the magic of a winter night by moonlight. No experience is needed, and headlamps are provided for you to illuminate your path. The two-hour hike is led by experienced guides who share personal stories about the area and habitat.
Whether skiing or snowshoeing, the well-marked wilderness trails are rated by level of difficulty making them ideal for all levels of recreational skiers, families and experts. Rentals of the newest equipment (cross-country ski and snowshoe) are available in many sizes for all ages. A limited number of glider ski sleds are on hand for babies.
There’s more to discover at the Nordic Centre. Pick up a winter scavenger hunt map at the main cabin and hunt for clues. Colourful snowshoes mark the spots with interesting facts to read about at each location. After an exhilarating day in the great outdoors, warm up by a wood stove in the rustic chalet or roast s’mores at the outdoor fire pit. Delicious hot foods, snacks and drinks may be purchased.
An ideal day-trip destination, Scenic Caves Nordic Centre is about a two-hour drive from anywhere in south central Ontario. Open daily December–March, weather-permitting, including holidays.
