Each month, the Paradise Theatre (Bloor and Dovercourt) offers relaxed screenings for families on weekend afternoons. These screenings are intended to offer a more hospitable environment for, but not limited to, those on the autism spectrum and for individuals with different sensory, learning and communication needs.

Relaxed Screenings feature dim lighting, lowered sound, subtitles or open captioning on-screen, and optional audio description. Sennheiser assistive hearing devices are available upon request.

Films start at the listed time, and are sold as general admission to allow extra seats and space for audiences. Patrons are welcome to leave and re-enter the auditorium as needed and to visit the Chill Zone in the theatre’s lobby.

The Oscar-nominated, animated, hand-drawn Song of the Sea is truly a wonder to behold. It tells the story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse, whom they discover is a “selkie,” someone blessed with the ability to change into a seal.

While deeply rooted in ancient Celtic folk tales, myths and magic, it’s also a very familiar, entirely relatable story focusing on both the fragility and the strength of familial bonds. From the animator behind The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea is a complete delight:a funny, life-affirming fantasy adventure sure to enchant audiences young and old.

Recommended for ages 7 and up.
