One of the most luxuriant and purely entertaining of 19th-century classical ballets, The Sleeping Beauty has, since its premiere in St. Petersburg in 1890 with a score by Tchaikovsky, held a special place in the affections and enthusiasms of dance lovers the world over.
This technically exciting and richly entertaining version of the ballet, performed by the National Ballet of Canada since 1972, was choreographed by Rudolf Nureyev in 1966 and restaged in 2006 by artistic director Karen Kain.
