Off-the-Beaten-Path in Vancouver

Just because I happen to live in Toronto, it doesn't mean I don't scour the rest of the country for great things to do with the family. Vancouver (one of my favourite cities) has some amazing outdoor activities that families can attend together and have a wonderful (and shh! even educational) day.

Just because I happen to live in Toronto, it doesn’t mean I don’t scour the rest of the country for great things to do with the family. Vancouver (one of my favourite cities) has some amazing outdoor activities that families can attend together and have a wonderful (and shh! even educational) day.

Breakfast Television in Vancouver recently invited me to come in and tell them about my favourite family activities in Vancouver and I wanted to share them with you!

Belcarra Regional Park
(Port Moody)
Break the Spanish Banks and Kits Beach routine and explore a new sandy destination. Belcarra Regional Park boasts the warmest lake in Greater Vancouver and is a sunbathers (or sandcastle builder’s) dream. The park is full of scenic picnic spots and walking trails. Don’t forget to bring the bikes.

Steveston Village (Richmond)
This quaint fishing village has it all. Walk the docks and get up close and personal with the day’s catch, explore Britannia Heritage Shipyard and grab some fish and chips at Pajo’s. If the wind is right, fly a kite at Gary Point Park and if the sun is hot, hit the Steveston Water Park. There’s some great boutique shopping in the village for mom too, and the London Heritage Farm, which offers an afternoon tea, for a great mother-daughter outing.

Southlands Heritage Farm (Vancouver)
An active working farm, that caters specifically to kids. Kids can learn about life on the farm, visit the garden vegetable patch, and you can pre-arrange pony rides too.

Fort Langley (Langley)

For a dose of BC history, Fort Langley is charming. It is the “birthplace of BC”, the first governor of British Columbia Sir James Douglas proclaimed the new Colony of British Columbia at Fort Langley on November 19, 1858. An old colonial style town with original buildings restored, it is fun to wander through the streets and visit the small boutiques, have lunch at Wendels (a bookstore/café – offering healthy, freshly prepared options). You can also visit the Fort Langley National Historic Site, a re-created town from the 1800’s.

So next time the kids whine about there being nothing to do, surprise them with an outing. You’ll like it so much you might make it a regular trip every summer!
