How to Think Outside the Box

Event Details

Think Outside of the Box Math Workshop is a Queen Elizabeth Academy initiative designed to instill a love of math in young children and to help them develop problem solving and innovative skills. In our first workshop of the series, we have invited a University of Waterloo lecturer (Shane B.) from the Mathematics and Computing department to conduct a fun and rewarding learning opportunity for children.

The current social and economic landscape is heavily geared toward S.T.E.M. knowledge and abilities, of which mathematics serves as the foundation. There is a need, however, for more than just one rote memorization of arithmetic, equations, and formulas. To be successful in the future, children must develop a mindset of exploration, innovation, creation, and solution-based skills. Children need to develop a genuine love of mathematics and to think outside of the box.

In this workshop, guest speakers will offer a reward and inspiring lesson for children:

1) How to develop problem-solving techniques

2) How to understand math concepts, rather than memorize them

3) How to think outside the box

In the corresponding parent seminar, we will provide valuable strategies for parents on how to work with their children:

1) How to nurture their children’s interest in math

2) How to build confidence in their children

3) How to build motivation in their children
