The Genée International Ballet Competition

Event Details

This event finished on 29 August 2019

One of the dance world’s most prestigious events, the Royal Academy of Dance’s (RAD) Genée International Ballet Competition returns to Toronto for the first time since 2008. Open to the public to attend, the Semi-Finals and Final will be an exhilarating showcase as some of the finest young dancers from around the world compete toe-to-toe for gold, silver and bronze awards and valuable industry recognition. Each competitor will perform three solos: a 19th or 20th century variation; an individual piece choreographed for the candidate, by a teacher friend, or themselves; and a world-premiere by internationally esteemed choreographer and dancer Gioconda Barbuto – the competition’s 2019 Commissioned Choreographer.

The Genée will also mark a special celebration of one of Canada’s most inspirational figures in dance, Karen Kain (Artistic Director, National Ballet of Canada), who will receive the RAD’s highest honour, the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award. Renowned dancers Karen Kain, Dame Monica Mason (Former Director, The Royal Ballet), Mikko Nissinen (Artistic Director, Boston Ballet) and Magdalena Popa (Principal Artistic Coach, National Ballet of Canada) will serve as the 2019 judges.
