Earth Day with Kids: Toronto’s Top Events for 2014

Family Fun

Earth Day is just a week away, on Tuesday, April 22, and Toronto begins its Earth Day celebration this weekend (April 19 and 20) with green events. The tradition is to plant a tree, which is a great family activity. But there’s much more to take part in. Take a look at our list of family-friendly Earth Day events in Toronto.

On This Weekend

It’s always Earth Day at the Evergreen Brick Works, but Earth Day weekend is chockablock with environmentally friendly to do, including a community tree planting, seed ball crafting, an educational family nature workshop, and the weekly farmer’s market. Get out and #getdirty! April 19–20, program times vary.

While the kids (ages 4–10) do supervised art-in-nature activities, you can attend the free seminar Natural Playscapes in Your Backyard at the Kortright Centre for Conservation. Registration required. April 19, 10–noon.

At Todmorden Mills, walk through the wildflower preserve, learn about the local habitat, and collarborate on a piece of environmental art. April 19, noon–4.

Plant in the Teaching Garden (designed specifically for kids), do a guided hike, and take part in themed crafts at the Toronto Botanical Garden. April 19, noon–4.

On Next Weekend

Do the traditional Earth Day tree-planting at Downsview Park. The goal is to plant 2,000 trees and create an urban forest. First come, first served. One tree per family. April 26, 10–2.

Get kids involved in their community with Clean Toronto Together, the City of Toronto’s annual community spring clean-up, between April 22 and 27. See a full list of clean-up locations or register your own. April 26–27.

The Green Living Show, at the Direct Energy Centre, touches on everything from clean eating to clean power. Programming for kids and parents includes interactive workshops, scavenger hunts, and nature-themed puppet shows. April 25–27.
