Family Fun

The holidays may be over, but there’s still plenty of fun winter activities to do with your kids through the GTA. Gear up for some outdoor adventures or get cozy and bring hot cocoa for some fun inside: either way, the whole family will have a blast at any of these events happening through January.

Pop-Up Planetarium at the AGO

Description: If you’re visiting the AGO with your kids this holiday season, don’t forget to explore the cosmos at the pop-up planetarium. Discover the vast array of landscapes across our solar system and throughout the universe, watch interactive presentations led by members of U of T’s Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and participate in the fun art-making activities.
Date: December 26, 2016 to January 8, 2017
Price: $5 for adults, $3 for youth aged 6 to 17, and FREE for children 5 and under

Once Upon a Time: Fairy Tales from the Osborne Collection

Description: Celebrate the best-loved fairy tales with books, toys, and games—get lost in the stories of princesses, giants, beasts, and fairies. Explore tales from Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, Edward Gorey, and Walt Disney and see how classic fairy tales have been reimagined over the last 300 years.
Date: November 5, 2016 to January 15, 2017

Guided Night Snowshoe Hike

Description: Go on an adventure through the snow when shadows and stars line the path. The night-time hike is led by professional staff and lasts about 1 1/2 to 2 hours through an enchanting winter wonderland. The trail leads through a beautiful forest with 100-foot tall trees, over a suspension bridge with views of the countryside, and gorgeous lookouts from the top of the Niagara Escarpment. The pace is moderate and no experience needed. Recommended for ages 8+.

Time: 6 pm to 8 pm
Price: For adults, youth, and seniors it’s $40 with snowshoe rental, $30 without snowshoe rental. Be sure to make a reservation*

Ice Skating

Location: Various spots around Toronto 
Description:
Take the kids for a twirl around the rink at one of the many ice skating locations across Toronto. With the cold weather promised this month, it’ll be a great time to bundle up and head out for some fun on the ice.
Price: FREE
You can also check out the Harbourfront Centre’s annual DJ Skate Nights that take place every Saturday in the winter.

Escape Room—The Missing List

Location: Mysterious Minds, 322 Bloor St. West

Description: Help Santa discover the lost Naughty & Nice list before the hour is up! Santa leaves for the North Pole in 60 minutes, so you’ll have to discover clues and solve riddles fast if you want to save Christmas!

The Illusionists – Live from Broadway

Description: This mind-blowing performance features seven incredible illusionists who will perform grand acts of levitation, mind-reading, illusion, and a full view water escape. Sophisticated and enchanting, this show will take your breath away.

Winter Bird Count 4 Kids

Description: Head out for a leisurely winter walk, enjoy the family time outdoors and learn to identify winter shorebirds. Warm refreshments and binoculars will be included and all levels of birding expertise are welcome.

The Little Mermaid

Description: Watch a timeless tale of love unfold in the live performance of Disney’s Little Mermaid. Princess Ariel is drawn to the world and lives of people on dry land and falls in love with Prince Eric. Making a deal with devious Ursula, Ariel has the chance to be human and remain so, if only she wins the kiss of true love from her prince. Will love win the day in this battle between good and evil? Date: January 20 to 29

Learn to Skate

Description: Give your little one the gift of skating lessons this holiday season, where they can join other kids at the beautiful outdoor Natrel Rink and beginning their journey on the ice. Classes are held outdoors, and unless weather is extreme, will be held in most conditions.

Mosaic Storytelling Festival

Description: In this series of all-ages winter storytelling events, you’ll hear tales of magic and wisdom woven together by storytellers from all across the globe. Mosaic offers multicultural performances, celebrating diversity and creativity.
Date: January 29, February 12 and 26, March 12 at 3 pm
Price: Pay what you can (suggested $5 per person)

Family Funday: Fossil Fest

Description: Tag along on a prehistoric journey that explores the tiny beginnings of huge dinosaurs, to the trail of fossils left on the Earth. It will be hosted at the ROM by researchers and the kids will get to participate in fun activities.

Monster Jam 2017

Location: Rogers Centre
Description:
Check out the most adrenaline-charged motorsports event of the year; the Monster Jam will have all your favourite trucks and drivers competing to be the Toronto Champion, including Grave Digger, Barbarian, Bounty Hunter, and many more!

Toronto International Boat Show

Description: Visit the world’s largest indoor lake at this year’s Boat Show. Join informative seminars, test your skills in hands-on experiences at the indoor lake, and have some fun with Twiggy the Water-Skiing Squirrel.
