Run, Jump, Throw, Catch, Strike (Yay!)

Hype

Is that our child? Banging on the back door, bat in hand, sulking because we won’t go outside with him?

Or perhaps that’s us, outside, playing catch on a Sunday afternoon in absolutely lovely weather (and of course we get bonus points for doing it one-handed, with a coffee nestled in the other paw).

Or maybe it’s a noisy group of neighbourhood kidlets running back and forth across our lawn or in front of our house, dodging cars and causing everyone on the street to worry that their window will be the next casualty.

As much as we enjoy playing with our wee ones (and seeing them being active), if we can still out-play them in soccer, catch or football (one-handed no less) then it might just be time for them to develop some serious gross motor skills. And if they’re terrorizing the neighbourhood with their skillz, perhaps it’s time to send them to a sports-filled day camp.

Either way, we want to give our kids the skills and confidence to enjoy a variety of sport and recreational activities for life.

And that’s where Sportplay comes to the rescue.

Sportplay is a multi-sport program for children 1 1/2 to 12 years old. They teach and develop the gross motor skills of running, jumping, throwing, catching and striking in a fun, positive, challenging but not exclusionary way. There, our kids will develop athletic skills including chasing/tagging, dodging/deking, collecting/gathering, body movement and manipulation and equipment manipulation. Their programs are creative, active and play-based so every kid has an equal opportunity to learn and have fun.

Not sure if Sportplay is for your kid? Why not try it out for free? They’re hosting a free, 3-hour Right to Play Day at Polson Pier (where they regularly host their “Sportplay Cool-Sport Camp”). Kids are introduced to  golf, rock climbing, beach volleyball, ultimate frisbee, soccer, basketball and swimming (8 – 12 years) or water-play (5 – 7 years).
